David Reid
David ReidManaging Director

Managing Director

David is an experienced communications and public affairs specialist who has worked in the science, engineering, and innovation sector for over fifteen years. A former geologist and keen amateur astronomer, he is passionate about science and communicating why research matters to anyone who will listen. He founded Matter PR in 2013 because he felt there was a need for a communications agency that really understood the science and innovation sector.

He was Director of The Times Cheltenham Science Festival from 20015-2017 and also helped establish the UK’s innovation centre for intelligent mobility, the Transport Systems Catapult, acting as their director of communications and marketing during their first two years. During that time, he created the UK’s first thought leadership festival for intelligent mobility, the Imagine Festival, now in its fifth year and led on promoting the UK’s strengths in driverless vehicle technology.

As head of marketing, communications, and stakeholder engagement at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) from 2008-2013, David led a large team of creatives responsible for delivering all of the council’s external communications activities.

In previous roles, David was Head of Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Engagement for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Head of Communications for medical research charity Deafness Research UK, Head of Media Relations at the Institute of Physics, and a Science Press Officer for University College London (UCL).

James Harrison
James Harrison Filmmaker and audio producer

Filmmaker and audio producer

James is a former BBC broadcaster and radio producer who founded his own production company in 2006 to bring a new philosophy to corporate filmmaking and audio production: that it should be about people first and technology second. Matter PR works with James to offer wide range of services for audio and film production as part of an integrated PR strategy.

He is a Wiltshire-based independent film-maker, director and editor with over 35 years of experience – much of it spent working for the BBC and is fascinated by people and their stories, and importantly, how to best capture their experiences on film to share with a wider audience. James believes that successful videos start by looking for the story – the perfect beginning, middle and end if you like, something that often comes from asking the right questions, and editing the story so it not only makes sense, but leaves a lasting impression on the audience.
