From our archives: UK scientist gambles on gravitational waves

Last week, we moved a step closer to detecting gravitational waves – the tiny ripples in the fabric of spacetime predicted by Einstein in 1916. Daily Galaxy and other news outlets reported on a paper published in Nature Photonics on 30th July which describes a dramatic increase in the sensitivity of the LIGO network of gravitational wave detectors. This won’t come as a surprise to Professor Jim Hough from the University of Glasgow who, almost ten years ago, placed a £25 bet with bookmaker Ladbrokes at 100-1 that gravitational waves would be discovered before 2010.
