New agency to focus on promoting science and engineering

Matter PR News Release

A new communications agency was launched today which aims to help university scientists and leading research groups inspire the public, government, and business about the importance of science and engineering.

Matter PR was established in January by David Reid, former communications chief for the UK’s main funding agency for science, EPSRC, part of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Matter is offering a range of services from strategy development and media relations to government relations and reputation management. The company plans to specialise in helping science and engineering organisations understand, connect, and influence their stakeholders.

With a strong background in science, government policy, and strategic communications, Matter aim to combine a strategic approach with a high level of creativity and innovation. They will focus on helping scientists to develop better relationships with the public and promoting the importance of science to government at a time when competition for limited government funding is becoming fierce.

David Reid, Managing Director of Matter PR said:

“Science and engineering matters. From mobile phones and iPads to new medical technology and solar cells, it makes our lives better. It’s the key to a healthy, prosperous, sustainable future.

But there is still a huge lack of awareness and understanding about science – how it works, what researchers do, and how best to invest in it. Matter PR was set up to help address this problem and work with leading research centres to raise their profile, engage the public, and convince those in power of its value.

We want to use our passion for science to help researchers develop innovative ways of communicating – activities that break through the noise and really connect with the public or government ministers and leave them wanting more.”

As well as in-house expertise, Matter have put together a network of leading agencies and award-winning freelancers to create a team large enough to allow them to handle major campaigns and large projects for their clients.

They will work closely with tothepoint, the cross-media design agency who developed Matter’s brand identity. tothepoint were selected as a partner of choice because of their track record in the science and engineering sector, having developed new brands for the British Science Association and Physiological Society.

In January, Matter PR picked up its first client Fraunhofer UK – a branch of Europe’s largest application-oriented research organisation – and are managing their national launch later this year.
